In honor of International Women’s Day, March 8th, we have interviewed Accident Care’s President, Dr. Alexis Lee

Why did you become a chiropractor?

I was hurt in multiple car accidents during my college years because I was driving so much during that period of time. Honestly, I tried many different types of treatment, but chiropractic care helped me the most. I was excited by the holistic and natural ways of chiropractic. With one of the Best Chiropractic Colleges located in my hometown (University of Western States) it just made sense to pursue a career in chiropractic. I’m very glad to be a part of the chiropractic profession and I hope to contribute to the overall growth and advancement of the chiropractic profession.

Why do you love what you do?

Chiropractic is wholesome and natural healthcare and I’m still amazed by the results that chiropractic care is able to deliver for our patients with little to no side effects. A career in chiropractic has been personally very rewarding for me. I’ve met and worked along with so many co-workers and colleagues who love what they do, and it doesn’t feel like work.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to read, cook, exercise like yoga or CrossFit.  Spending time with my family and friends

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Vietnam until I was 11, since 11 I have lived in SE Portland Oregon.

When you became a chiropractor, did you ever dream that you would be president of a company this large?

No, when I first started out in the profession I didn’t exactly have everything mapped out.  I knew I wanted to do work on my own terms and do it my way, so to speak.  Along the way good people have come along and joined the company, and along with them we made it to where we are today. I’m honored that they continue to let me lead us and I hope to continue to lead the company to even better days.

What are you most proud of regarding the company?

I’m very proud of the way our company handled the current pandemic. We have shown resilience in this time of uncertainty and economic hardship. We continue to show up every day for our patients and our communities.  We have shown support for each other and remained steadfast in our goals to serve our patients in a safe environment.

What are your goals for the company?

I want to continue providing a safe and supportive workplace for all of our employees.  I want equal opportunities at Accident Care for all people regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, religion and whatever that differences may be.

How do you feel about being a woman in a male dominated profession?

To be honest, I don’t approach my day-to-day work from a woman perspective.  I don’t analyze problems and solutions from that perspective. I don’t say to myself because I am a woman, I see things this way or do things that way.  I continue to surround myself with hard working and respectable partners and employees and I go about my business.  I show up at work every day ready to lead and work hard.  I’ve encountered situations where I feel people tried to beat me down because I am a woman and a minority, but that’s more of their problem than it is mine.

One of the most commonly asked questions that chiropractors get, surprisingly, is “are chiropractors real doctors?” In the field of medicine, the term “doctor” is applied to so many kinds of people who take different courses and training, receive different certifications, and have different internships. You would never question a dentist’s or a veterinarian’s training, so why wouldn’t you trust a chiropractor’s?

The biggest reason that people question the validity of chiropractors is largely because of a huge lack of information about chiropractors, but a wealth of misinformation about what it is that chiropractors do. At Accident Care Chiropractic, we want every single one of our patients to understand exactly what it is that we do during a chiropractic appointment, and why choosing chiropractic care is the best approach to healing and recovery. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about chiropractors:

What do chiropractors do?

Chiropractic medicine is a holistic approach to medical treatment, with chiropractors focusing more on treating the whole body and person, with emphasis on treating and finding the cause of an issue rather than the symptoms. Specifically, chiropractors are best at treating disorders and illnesses of the neuro-muscular system through manipulation and adjustment of the spine.

One of the hallmarks of chiropractic medicine is that there is no use of drugs or surgery. Because of the spinal alignment that chiropractors work for, the overall nervous system improves, allowing your body to begin the healing process of problems such as pain and restricted movement.

What’s the difference between a chiropractor and an MD?

Before we tell you the differences between them, let’s start with the similarities. Chiropractors and MD’s both go through 4 years of a medical school curriculum, followed by at least 1 year of internship. Both have the option of working for large practices or working as solo practitioners. Both MD’s and chiropractors go through extensive training to be able to practice on patients, however, the way they go about their practice is much, much different.

Since chiropractors are more focused on treating the cause of an illness, chiropractic treatment tends to be longer, though the effects are more long term. Again, chiropractors never use drugs or surgery to treat an issue, so you will never be prescribed anything to mask your pain or discomfort. MD’s are more likely to do this, resulting in short, much more sporadic appointments. However, if you need your appendix removed or any other kind of surgery, an MD is qualified to do this, whereas a chiropractor isn’t. Since more information is more widely known about MD’s rather than chiropractors, the patient pool for chiropractors tends to be more self-selected.  Before you visit any kind of medical professional, you should always to your research to make sure you’re getting the kind of treatment you want.

What are the benefits of chiropractic appointments?

While there are many benefits of seeing a chiropractor regularly, it is important to consider seeing both a chiropractor and an MD to treat whatever may come up. Again, both are qualified to do different things, and depending on what your illness may require, one may be better suited for the course of treatment you need. However, there are some things that are unique to regular chiropractic care that has advantages over other medical care, such as:

  • Migraines and headaches
  • Sciatica/nerve pain
  • Back pain
  • Herniated discs
  • Car accident injuries
  • Neck pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Spinal maladjustment
  • Sports injuries

Getting into a car accident is a stressful experience for everyone. Not just for the possible repairs and insurance issues, but especially if you are injured or experiencing any physical pain from the damages. While you should always seek medical care to treat your injuries, you may be asking yourself if and when you should seek an attorney or lawyer after a car accident

Depending on the type of injury you have sustained, hiring an attorney after a car accident may be a more worthwhile decision than you think. We recommend getting a lawyer who focuses on accidents immediately after your accident occurs so you can receive legal advice on how to proceed and reap the benefits of a professional if that’s the case. Here are some of the many benefits of hiring a lawyer after a car accident

  • Contingent Fee Basis Payment. Most personal injury lawyers work on a contingent fee basis, meaning they don’t get paid until you get paid from a successful settlement. This means that your lawyer will likely work harder for you so they can get paid from the settlement, and you won’t have to pay for anything upfront. Because of this, you have little to lose and only things to gain by hiring an attorney after a car accident
  • Knowledge of Legal Proceedings. Any good lawyer will have a good understanding of laws and the legal proceedings related to your case. They will be able to explain to you any of the processes that you may not understand and be able to advise you on what the best move to make next is. Regardless, facing a team of legal professionals that an insurance company has hired by yourself can be overwhelming and potentially scary, and having your own personal injury lawyer ready to interpret and fight for you will make the process much easier for you.
  • Sit Back and Relax. Speaking of making things easier for you, if you are in the process of filing a claim or trying to reach a settlement because of a car accident, your attorney will make everything easier by doing all the legwork for you. This means communicating with the other parties and lawyers, filing paperwork, organizing paperwork, obtaining evidence, writing documents and letters, and other legal documents. While your lawyer is working hard on your behalf, you can continue to focus on recovering from your accident, knowing someone is always behind you.
  • Legal Advocation.  Should you have to go to court or go before a judge and jury, your attorney will be your voice for you. They will make sure your thoughts and concerns are expressed in court and do their best to make sure you receive every possible benefit and are properly compensated.

If you are currently taking time off work due to recovering from a car accident injury, chances are you’re looking for anything and everything to heal as quickly as possible. Fortunately, chiropractic care after a car accident is highly recommended and can help you get healed and recovered quickly, so you can get back to work. In most cases, your insurance will pay for a minimum of 70% of your loss of income while you are in therapy.

Depending on the type of injury and where the injury was sustained, your recovery time and treatment may defer. However, since many automobile accident injuries affect your musculoskeletal system, it’s important to begin chiropractic treatment as soon as possible to prevent injuries from affecting your everyday activities. By realigning your spine, your body can heal holistically, and faster! Chiropractic therapy can heal injuries from car accidents like:

  • Neck pain
  • Whiplash
  • Concussion
  • Shoulder and Back Pain
  • Arm and Leg Pain
  • Herniated disks
  • Sprains
  • Strains

Though you often won’t begin to show symptoms of these injuries until many weeks after your accident, it doesn’t diminish how serious the injury is. You should consider seeing a chiropractor soon after your accident to minimize the amount of damage that the injury could cause long term. These injuries could impact other motions and parts of the body that were seemingly “unaffected” in your accident. During your appointment, your chiropractor will get a sense of the treatment you need by inspecting the injured area via x-rays, MRIs, or additional lab tests. Once the injury is properly assessed, your treatment may involve:

  • Electrical Stimulation
  • Acupuncture
  • Exercises
  • Stretches

A chiropractor or chiropractic physician is a medical professional who is trained to diagnose and treat disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Chiropractors treat patients of all ages—infants, children, and adults. They believe in a conservative (non-surgical) hands-on approach to treating these disorders. Chiropractors don’t hold medical degrees, so they aren’t medical doctors. They do have extensive training in chiropractic care and are licensed practitioners. Chiropractic care is used as an alternative to, or to complement, conventional medicine.

What Does a Chiropractor Do?

A chiropractor is an expert in the care of your bones, muscles, and nerves that constitute about 60% of the body. The theory behind chiropractic care is that proper alignment of the body’s musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Manipulation is used to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by a traumatic event, such as falling, or repetitive stress, such as sitting without proper back support. Chiropractic treatment is primarily used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

What Can a Chiropractor Help With?

A doctor of chiropractic can help you with more than back pain. In addition to spinal manipulation and chiropractic care as treatment for acute low back pain, research has also shown chiropractic care to be helpful in treating neck pain, headaches, pinched nerve, osteoarthritis, and even fibromyalgia may respond to the moderate pressure used both chiropractors.

What Ailments Can Chiropractors Treat?

Chiropractic care is not limited to neuromuscular and musculoskeletal problems. Apart from helping you with back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, or a pinched nerve, a chiropractor is also capable of treating whiplash, spinal osteoarthritis, short leg, piriformis syndrome, Myofascial pain, degenerative disc disease, and coccydynia and cervicogenic headaches. This is why chiropractic care is usually recommended to those who are experiencing pain following an automobile accident.

When you’re going through life you don’t like to think about the worst-case scenario, but accidents do happen and the best thing you can do is be prepared should the unexpected happen so if you’re injured you can recover without the burden of added expense. According to estimates by the National Safety Council, more than 12 million automobile accident-related injuries occur in the United States every year. Personal Injury Protection or (PIP) offers protection from costly medical expenses, fees, and lost wages. In short, Personal injury protection (PIP) is an extension of car insurance available that covers medical expenses and, in some cases, lost wages and other damages. PIP is sometimes referred to as “no-fault” coverage because the statutes enacting it are generally known as no-fault laws, and PIP is designed to be paid without regard to “fault,” or more properly, legal liability. This means that no matter who was at fault for the accident you are entitled to use your insurance to cover any necessary treatment or expenses

Here are some key factors to consider when it comes to PIP:

States with mandatory PIP coverage

  • Delaware
  • Florida[4]
  • Hawaii
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland (unless a waiver is signed at initial purchase of the policy)
  • Massachusetts[2]
  • Michigan[5]
  • Minnesota
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Oregon
  • North Dakota
  • Pennsylvania
  • Utah

According to esurance, a division of ALLstate, here is what you can expect when it comes to PIP coverage: PIP offers vital protection from costly medical expenses after an accident. Because it’s such an important coverage, check the specifics of your health insurance plan and work-loss coverage, if you have these, to determine how much PIP coverage to add to your car insurance policy. Check to see how your health plan, in particular, handles expenses after a car accident. Though the specifics can vary greatly by state, PIP generally covers you, drivers listed on your policy, and your passengers.

In case of an accident-related injury, personal injury protection can cover:

  • Medical expenses: medical and surgical treatment, dental and optometric treatment, ambulance and nursing services, medication, medical supplies, chiropractic services, and prosthetic devices
  • Lost wages (in some cases): if you or your passengers are unable to work due to accident-related injuries, PIP can help you recover lost wages.
  • Substitute services (in some cases): if accident-related injuries keep you or those covered from performing household tasks, like cleaning, PIP helps pay for substitute services, like a cleaning crew.
  • Funeral expenses (in some cases): if accident-related injuries result in death, PIP can help pay for funeral expenses.

Although many injuries, such as a broken bone, are immediately apparent, there are certain injuries that may not manifest until a few weeks or several months after the accident. A whiplash car accident, for example, may not result in debilitating neck pain until a few months after the accident, making it difficult to seek early treatment. If you or a loved one was recently involved in a vehicular accident, it’s a good idea to set an appointment with a car accident chiropractor.
