When people experience pain on a daily basis, the tendency is to shrug it off and dismiss it as a result of the long hours they put in at work. While this may be true, it may also be due to a chronic condition that is yet to be identified.

According to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), there are easily as much as 50 million American adults that suffer from chronic pain, some of which are severe. This study was published in the American Pain Society journal in 2015. That’s a highly significant number, and it begs the question of why people are not doing anything about their pain. For all you know, you may be part of that statistic but you just haven’t realized it yet.

Chronic Pain

It’s normal for people to feel tinges of pain in a day, especially if the body is subjected to rigorous physical activities, like carrying heavy loads. However, if you begin feeling acute pain that persists for more than 12 weeks, then it might be chronic in nature.

Its origins may vary, but usually, it stems from an initial injury, such as a back sprain, for example. Some chronic pain do not really get worse over time--it’s the constant presence of it that affects one’s physical comfort. In some instances, though, the chronic pain does escalate, severely diminishing the person’s quality of life. Because of the severe pain, they can no longer do the things they used to do and enjoy, and may experience limited mobility.

Chiropractic Treatment

Despite the seeming belief that it’s ok to just pop pills to manage the discomfort of chronic pain, one viable alternative stands out: chiropractic treatment. The treatment revolves around manipulations to correct the spine’s position and alignment. The reason behind the method is that any misalignment--even the most minute--can cause pain because nerves are pinched causing pain receptors to get mixed signals.

With chiropractic, the goal is to provide relief by addressing the incorrect position of the spine, which may be affecting other parts of the musculoskeletal system. Over the years, the treatment has expanded to include other kinds of treatments, such as postural exercises, nutritional consultation, and even ultrasound, thereby providing a more holistic and comprehensive approach.

What’s more, chiropractors now work closely with primary care doctors, surgeons, and pain experts, essentially making them part of a team to help give pain sufferers the best possible healthcare.

Practices like Accident Care Chiropractic & Massage of Portland can help people suffering from chronic pain to finally get the relief they’ve been looking for all this time.
