Experiencing a car accident can be as traumatic as it is painful. In fact, research shows that car accidents are a leading cause of injuries in the U.S. In 2012, there were 5.6 million car accidents in the country and from this, 1.6 million injuries were reported. Such injuries, if left untreated, can become worse and lead to permanent paralysis or even death.

Here are a number of common car accident injuries that require immediate treatment:

Spinal Cord Injury

A traumatic spinal cord injury may be the result of a sudden blow to your spine that ends up crushing, dislocating, compressing or fracturing it. This kind of injury is especially common among motor vehicle accident survivors. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that as much as 46 percent of spinal cord injuries in the US are the result of traffic accidents.

During a car accident, the spine may end up getting flexed beyond its normal range of motion, which may end up causing significant damage to the spinal cord. In turn, this may lead to other complications in your body, including low blood pressure or difficulty breathing.

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc can occur as a result of a car accident. A sudden collision can cause a piece of your spinal disc to jut out of place. When this happens, you end up experiencing severe pain in your back, legs and hands. Worse, you can also end up experiencing numbness in your calves, toes and fingers. This will make daily activities harder to keep up with.

Torn ACL

Your anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, may end up getting torn after taking a sudden blow from a particular object. One way to determine if you are suffering from a torn ACL is the presence of painful swelling in your knee. It's also possible for your knee to suddenly feel quite unstable. Although a torn ACL is not a life-threatening injury, it is still important to have it treated as soon as possible so that it does not get much worse.

If you want to undergo ACL treatment without the use of drugs, you may want to consider visiting a Tigard chiropractic clinic for an all-natural approach to your treatment. Just remember to let the clinic know you have been in a car accident recently so that it can put you on the right course for treatment and recovery. Consult a chiropractor right away before your injuries becomes more painful and severe.
