A man stretches at his work desk because of lower back pain.

According to research from The Good Body, roughly eight out of every ten Americans will experience lower back issues at some point in their lives. Lower back pain among American adults has been on the rise over the last decade. Why? It’s because most American adults spend so much time at sitting at their desks while working. In fact, 54 percent of American adults who experience lower back pain are those who spend majority of their time sitting at work.

Fortunately, there are many effective treatments available throughout Portland, OR for lower back pain. One of the best treatment options available would be to schedule an appointment with a respected chiropractic practice like Accident Care Chiropractic and Massage of Portland. After a few sessions with an experienced chiropractor, you may begin to notice remarkable improvement.

Of course, simply visiting your chiropractor isn’t enough to stave off lower back pain, especially in-between sessions. With that in mind, chiropractors recommend you try following these tips to help you avoid a relapse:

Improve Your Seating Posture

One of the quickest ways to stave off lower back pain is by correcting your seating posture. Poor seating posture places a tremendous amount of pressure on the lower back. You can avoid this by sitting correctly: push your hips as far back into the chair a possible, keep your feet flat on the floor, maintain knee level just below your hips, and keep your weight evenly spread between your hips.

Bring a Travel-Sized Pillow

Consider yourself lucky if your office provides you with ergonomic chairs with proper lower back support. If your office chair lacks this particular feature, makeshift back supports can easily be made. Small travel-sized pillows are a great alternative. If you do not own one, you can easily roll up a thick jacket and use that to support your lower back’s natural curve.

Strengthen Your Core Muscles

When dealing with back pain, exercise is probably the last thing on your mind. However, you may want to consider trying exercises that strengthen your core muscles (abdominals, etc.). Strengthening these muscles sufficiently allows them to provide natural support to the lower back. Exercise also helps improve blood flow, which helps deliver more healing nutrients to the lower back. Sit-ups are a quick way to work on your core muscles—when done correctly. You may want to start out with the exercises that your chiropractor suggests.
